Heroic Train Staff Member Suffers Severe Wounds Amid Mass Knife Incident on High-Speed Train
A courageous railway staff member who stepped in to save travelers during a mass stabbing attack on a high-speed train has suffered life-threatening wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Frightening Incident
Surveillance footage reportedly depicts the staff member attempting to halt the attacker as the train traveled between Peterborough and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders described a terrifying 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with injured passengers running through carriages.
The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Police declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Crisis Response and Consequences
The incident on Saturday night led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five individuals have since been discharged from hospital.
A bystander recorded the suspect brandishing a big knife and being subdued with a stun device as he confronted officers on the station. He was allegedly heard yelling, "End my life, end my life."
“This terrible incident has affected many people. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – especially the courageous employee of rail staff whose family are being assisted by specialist officers,” stated a senior law enforcement officer.
Union Response and Calls for Action
Train unions were swift to praise employees and call for more measures. One labor leader said he would be “seeking urgent discussions with government, rail employers and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the best available assistance, tools and effective protocols in operation”.
A different union leader encouraged the train operator and government “to move swiftly to examine safety, to help the affected employees, and to ensure that no incident like this happens again”.
Driver Praised for Quick Action
The operator who halted the service at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been praised by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He didn’t halt the train in the middle of two stations where it’s obviously challenging for the first responders to reach, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much waiting,” explained a association representative.
Additional Details
Police said they got the initial distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One witness described at first thinking if the situation was a Halloween joke, but quickly realized from people's expressions that it was serious.
Police have confirmed there is no evidence to indicate the event was a terrorist incident and have requested the public to come forward with any further information.
Train services on the impacted line are anticipated to experience disruption until the following day, with travelers recommended to postpone their journeys where possible.
