Major Internet Outage Impacts Many Websites and Mobile Apps

A widespread web outage has impacted numerous websites and applications worldwide, and users experiencing issues accessing the internet after problems at Amazon’s cloud computing service.

The impacted apps encompass Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, along with a host of Amazon-owned platforms such as its main retail platform and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was affected as well as its branches Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were additional accounts of issues accessing the HM Revenue and Customs site on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring customers used online platforms to state their security devices were failing.

In the UK alone, accounts of issues on particular apps ran into the tens of thousands for every service.

The company stated that the problem started in the eastern region of the US at Amazon Web Services, a unit that supplies essential web framework for numerous firms, who lease capacity on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the most extensive online services system.

Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8am BST), officials reported “elevated problem frequencies and delays” for the cloud services in a region on the eastern US of the America. The widespread consequence seemed to disrupt platforms around the world, with the outage tracking website showing problems with the same sites in various regions.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors internet outages, also reported a surge in problems on the start of the week, including several cases located in Virginia, the site of the eastern US data center where AWS said the issues began.
